Poulos Moves from State to City

Courtney Poulos has joined Indianapolis Economic Development, Inc., to oversee and enhance the organization’s business development efforts with companies based in Europe, Asia and South America, reports the IEDI.

In this newly created role of director of International Economic Development, Poulos will help recruit global companies to Indianapolis, as well as foster relationships with those companies already located here who are based in or doing business in those regions of the world.

Poulos will focus her much of her attention on Europe, while overseeing a team of international business developers who will lead similar efforts in Asia and South America. Those team members will join IEDI in the coming months.

Prior to joining IEDI, she was employed with the Indiana Economic Development Corporation where she served as the project manager for international development. She is a graduate of The University of Indianapolis as well as The University of Kent‐Brussels School of International Studies in Belgium.

Indianapolis Economic Development, Inc. is Marion County’s local economic development organization. "One Step Ahead of Hitler"

Fred Gross, author of One Step Ahead of Hitler: A Jewish Child's Journey through France, discusses his book at 7 p.m. tomorrow [11 May] in Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 4th Avenue SE, Carmel. It is sponsored by the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation.

Gross knew much about the history of the Holocaust, but he knew very little of his or his family's story. It was not until the late 1980s, when he began to ask questions, that his mother opened up about their flight from the German invasion of Belgium. Later, his two older brothers would add to their mother's memories. Most of the Grosses' flight takes place in France during its defeat and collaboration with the Nazis, when 75,000 Jews were rounded up for deportation to death camps.

Gross was born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1936. A graduate of New York University, he was a reporter for the Journal-Courier, a daily newspaper in New Haven, Conn., and has been a public relations specialist in education for nearly thirty years. For the past 17 years Gross has been actively involved in the Jewish community in Louisville, Ky. He has taught a Holocaust curriculum to Sunday school students, and continues to share his story with middle and high school students and adult audiences.

Kuijken visits UIndy for IBO concert

Baroque flutist and conductor Barthold Kuijken will perform at the University of Indianapolis as part of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra's concert tomorrow (23 February).

Kuijken, a native of Belgium and the IBO's new artistic director, will lead the orchestra in a program of music from the four principal nations of Baroque music: Italy (represented by the music of Corelli), France (Rebel and Campra), Germany (Handel) and England (Purcell).

"Les Nations" begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall, Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, UIndy, 1400 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis.

International Design Symposium

Designers, critics, scholars, manufacturers and dealers are participating in a two-day symposium at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in conjunction with the "European Design" exhibit on display 8 March through 21 June.

"Shaping a New Century: An International Design Symposium" will be held 6 and 7 March at the IMA to examine the present and future of European decorative and industrial design.

Four sessions will focus on creating, making, judging and designing.

Registration information is online. Cost is $150 for students and $250 for the public.

Emmis Adds Bulgarian Radio Chain

Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications Corporation announced it has acquired Inforadio, a national radio chain broadcasting in 13 Bulgarian cities, according to Indianapolis Business Journal. Balkan Broadcasting EAD, an Emmis subsidiary, purchased 100 percent of the stations' parent company, Infopress & Company OOD, a Bulgarian limited liability company. Emmis International also owns and operates national stations or networks in Belgium (Be One), Hungary (Slager Radio), and Slovakia (Radio Expres).
