Russian Orthodox Music Performed in Indy

The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir performs Sergei Rachmaninoff's Vespers on 6 and 7 November in two Indy churches.

Hear what has been called "the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church" performed at 8 p.m. Saturday in downtown Indianapolis at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and at 2:30 p.m. the next afternoon in the newly-constructed Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Carmel.

Indy Among Top Cities For Exports

A new study shows Indianapolis is among the nation's leading metro areas for exports, reports Inside INdiana Business. Research from the The Brookings Institution shows the Indianapolis-Carmel area ranks ninth in share of exports and 20th in the value of exports.

Ingraham Honored by Tochigi Prefectural Government

On 15 September, senior representatives of the Tochigi Prefectural Government presented official documents signed by Governor Tomikazu Fukuda to Larry Ingraham (pictured), President of Ingraham & Associates, Inc. of Carmel, designating him as “Tochigi Goodwill Ambassador”.

Tochigi Prefecture, Japan is the sister-state of Indiana.

Indianapolis Greek Festival Moves to Carmel

The 36th annual Indianapolis Greek Festival will be held 11 and 12 September at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 3500 West 106th Street, Carmel.

Among the Greek specialties served at the fest are souvlaki (pork or chicken kebabs), saganaki (flaming Kasseri cheese), dolmades (grape leaves stuffed with seasoned ground beef and rice), loukoumades (honey puffs), koulourakia (butter cookies sprinkled with sesame seeds) and -- of course -- baklava.

Entertainment includes the IKARI Band and the Holy Trinity Hellenic Dance Troupes.

Advance sale ticket books are $15 each, and include $15 in food coupons plus gate admission. (Admission is $5 at the gate, kids under 12 get in free.)

"One Step Ahead of Hitler"

Fred Gross, author of One Step Ahead of Hitler: A Jewish Child's Journey through France, discusses his book at 7 p.m. tomorrow [11 May] in Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 4th Avenue SE, Carmel. It is sponsored by the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation.

Gross knew much about the history of the Holocaust, but he knew very little of his or his family's story. It was not until the late 1980s, when he began to ask questions, that his mother opened up about their flight from the German invasion of Belgium. Later, his two older brothers would add to their mother's memories. Most of the Grosses' flight takes place in France during its defeat and collaboration with the Nazis, when 75,000 Jews were rounded up for deportation to death camps.

Gross was born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1936. A graduate of New York University, he was a reporter for the Journal-Courier, a daily newspaper in New Haven, Conn., and has been a public relations specialist in education for nearly thirty years. For the past 17 years Gross has been actively involved in the Jewish community in Louisville, Ky. He has taught a Holocaust curriculum to Sunday school students, and continues to share his story with middle and high school students and adult audiences.

Chinese Classes in Carmel

Continuing Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis has scheduled two Chinese language classes at the Community Life and Learning Center, 515 East Main Street, Carmel. "Beginning Chinese" starts a series of eight lessons from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursdays on 17 January. "Beginning Chinese Level II" starts a series of eight lessons from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting 16 January. Instructor for both classes (each of which is $139) is Lisu Kwong. England Comes to Carmel

Inside INdiana Business reports that Oxford BioSignals Medical will move its global headquarters to Carmel from England, and create 120 jobs in Carmel over the next five years.
