International Education Week

In celebration of International Education Week, program directors will be promoting their study abroad programs at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis.

An information table will be on the second floor of Cavanaugh Hall on the IUPUI campus from 15-18 November, where students can find out more information about programs traveling to India, China, France, Germany, Dominican Republic, South Korea, Greece, Canada and many more.

Lilly to Unveil Several Studies in Canada

According to Inside INdiana Business, Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Company will present 14 studies involving its osteoporosis medications at the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research annual meeting, which begins today in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The drugmaker will share data about Forteo and Evista.

Drum Corps International World Championships

The 2010 Drum Corps International World Championships will take place in Indiana from 10-24 August. The competitive action will kick off on 10 August in Michigan City before making its way to downtown Indianapolis.

The Drum Corps International World Championships is the pinnacle of the annual DCI Tour, a series of more than 100 live competitive events that take place across the United States from June through August. The DCI World Championships mark a week-long celebration of the “very best” in the world of marching music. In 2010, more than 40 drum and bugle corps will compete in two classes for the Open and World Class World Championship titles. Participating units will represent more than 20 states and Canada.

Tickets for the Open Class Quarterfinals in Michigan City are available through the Drum Corps International Box Office. Tickets for all events taking place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis are available through Ticketmaster.

Rolls-Royce Lands Deal For Canadian Air Force

Lockheed Martin Corp. has selected Indy-based Rolls-Royce to provide engines for military aircraft flown by the Canadian Air Force, reports Inside INdiana Business. The six-year deal is worth more than $70 million and has the potential to exceed $260 million over the life expectancy of the fleet. Rolls-Royce will partner with StandardAero of Winnipeg, Manitoba, to provide engine repair services to the Canadian Air Force.

Magic Lantern Society Meets in Bloomington

America's only "magic lanternist" will be among the performers, scholars, artists and collectors at the 14th annual convention of the Magic Lantern Society of the USA and Canada, reports the Indiana University News Bureau.

David Francis and Joss Marsh (pictured) are helping to host the annual convention of the Magic Lantern Society of the U.S.A. and Canada. This is the first time the event is taking place in Indiana.

Indiana University Bloomington will host the 20-23 May convention, which is sponsored by the IU Department of English and the Department of Communication and Culture in conjunction with the Magic Lantern Society of the USA and Canada.

The Magic Lantern Society collects, preserves and shares information on the early lantern devices that were invented in 1659 and were used to entertain and educate audiences prior to the advent of film. Lantern slides were hand-painted in vivid colors on glass and projected on walls and cloth screens. By the mid-19th century, black-and-white lantern slides were produced photographically; popular images included travel scenes, dramatic story slides, moral tales, song slides, religious and patriotic themes and comic pictures.

In its 19th-century heyday, there was a lantern in every public institution, and most middle-class households had at least a "toy" lantern. The magic lantern has been referenced by writers such as Charles Dickens and Mary Shelley, as well as revered by pioneers and masters of the cinema screen such as Georges Méliès and Ingmar Bergman.

Because of the scarcity of lantern materials in universities, museums, archives or libraries in the United States, the devices have largely passed out of public memory, but private collectors have ensured that the lanterns are still remembered and celebrated.

Members of the public are invited to attend the public sessions of the Bloomington conference, which includes an exhibit at the Lilly Library, two shows at the Fine Arts Auditorium, a silent film screening with live piano in Whittenberger Auditorium and a "Magic Lantern Spectacular" at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Terry Borton, a fourth-generation lanternist and the only professional lanternist in America, will take part in the performances.

'The Failure of Global Capitalism'

Terry Gibbs and Garry Leech, authors of The Failure of Global Capitalism: From Cape Breton to Colombia and Beyond, will speak at 7:30 p.m. 12 April in Room 141 of Jordan Hall on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, as part of the Drew Brahos Lecture Series.

In their lecture, to be delivered jointly, Gibbs and Leech will explain what they see as the untenable dynamics of the status quo and explore alternatives that might lead towards a sustainable global future.

Leech is an independent journalist and author of numerous books, including Beyond Bogotá: Diary of a Drug War Journalist in Colombia (Beacon Press, 2009) and Crude Interventions: The United States, Oil and the New World Disorder (Zed Books, 2006). He teaches international politics at Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Gibbs is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and director of the Centre for International Studies at Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia, Canada. She was formerly director of the North American Congress on Latin America.

Just Marketing International Expanding to Asia

Zionsville-based motorsports agency Just Marketing International plans to open an office in Asia later this year, reports Inside INdiana Business. JMI says it will announce the exact location soon and is currently looking for a vice president of Partnership Development Asia. JMI employs more than 140 people, operates six offices in four countries (England, Germany, Canada and the U.S.) and manages more than $300 million in annual motorsports investments.

Québec Firm to Acquire Tangent Rail Corporation

Stella-Jones Inc. announced today that it has signed a non-binding letter of intent to acquire Tangent Rail Corporation (“Tangent”), a provider of wood cross-tie supply chain services to the railroad industry. This acquisition will expand Stella-Jones’ capabilities within the U.S. railway tie industry and provide the Company with creosote manufacturing operations. Stella-Jones is based in Saint-Laurent, Québec, Canada.

Tangent serves the railroad industry with treated wood products, mainly railway ties, through facilities located in Warrior, Ala.; Terre Haute and Winslow, Ind.; Alexandria, La. and McAlisterville, Penn. The wood preservative, creosote, is produced at its distilleries in Terre Haute, Ind., and Memphis, Tenn.

Dow AgroSciences and Canadian Biotech

Indianapolis-based Dow AgroSciences LLC and Agrisoma Biosciences Inc. of British Colombia, Canada have signed a research and commercial license option agreement, reports Inside INdiana Business. The deal provides Dow AgroSciences with access to Agrisoma's proprietary Engineered Trait Loci (ETL) technology. The two companies have collaborated since 2004 on high value protein production in plants and plant cell cultures. The new agreement builds on that relationship and expands use of the ETL technology into field crops.

Dow AgroSciences Expands Seed Business in Canada

An affiliate of Indianapolis-based Dow AgroSciences LLC is acquiring the largest, privately owned, multi-crop breeding program in Canada, reports Inside INdiana Business. Dow AgroSciences Canada Inc. plans to purchase the Hyland Seeds brand and the sales, marketing and administrative areas. Dow will continue to independently market seeds under the Hyland Seeds brand and keeps its headquarters in Blenheim, Ontario.

US-Canada Conference at Purdue

The NEXTRANS Center, with the assistance of the government of Canada and the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), will host a conference on U.S.-Canada border trade, security and mobility challenges on 16 November.

The daylong event - titled In Step, In Line, On Time: Regional Strategies for Trade, Security, and Mobility Challenges at the U.S.-Canada Border - will provide an opportunity for researchers and private-sector stakeholders in the Great Lakes region to engage in a dialogue with high-level officials of the U.S. and Canadian government.

Inuit Artist Visits Eiteljorg Museum

Goota Ashoona (left), a third-generation Canadian Inuit artist, is in residence at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, located in White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis. Her visit continues through 8 November.

Ashoona is the granddaughter of graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona and the daughter of Kiawak Ashoona. For the past half dozen years she has worked alongside her husband, Bob Kussy, son and nephew at the Ashoona family studio in Yellowknife, the capital of Canada's Northwest Territories. The family’s artwork can be found in many institutions and galleries that showcase Canadian Inuit art. She performs regularly as a professional throat singer and has been featured on a documentary series on cable television’s The Lifetime Channel. During her residence, she is hosting workshops and demonstrations for school groups and the public.

International Water Ski Competitions Come to Central Indiana

Central Indiana has won a bid to host the 2010 Disabled Water Ski National Championships and 2nd Pan Am Championships next summer, reports Inside INdiana Business. The competition will take place 25-28 August 2010 at Hawthorn Lake, near Danville. Organizers say they expect a record number of water skiers from the United States, Brazil, Mexico and Canada to perform tricks and tackle the courses.

Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Sports Program, the Indiana Water Ski Association and Hawthorn Lake Ski Club prepared the winning bid. The Water Skiers with Disabilities Association is one of nine sport disciplines of USA Water Ski, the national governing body of organized water skiing in the United States. Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Sports Program is an independent, self-funded, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Foundation. Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana is a community collaboration between Clarian Health and St. Vincent Health.

Global Design Thailand Service Learning Project

A group of six students from Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis traveled to Thailand this summer for a service-learning project led by Jan Cowan, Associate Professor in the Architectural Technology Program in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, and assisted by Timothy Diemer, the school's director of international services, who has wide experience in Thailand.

The IUPUI group's current project is the design for renovation of a traditional canal-side market, reports the IUPUI News Center.

Five of the IUPUI students represent the school's Design and Communication Technology Department: Amy Clifford, Mary Jensen, Stephanie Richard, Chris Savoy and Yodit Weldu. A sixth student, Steve Lingg, comes to the group from the school's program in Computer Graphics Technology and serves as the group's multimedia specialist.

Rajamangala University of Technology in Thanyaburi [RMUTT] is the partner institution in Thailand. The protocol for cooperation between IUPUI and RMUTT was established when a general agreement for cooperation was signed in 2005.

The 2009 Thai project is an activity of Global Design Studio, an international network of students who apply their skills in architecture, interior design, and related fields in service to communities in need. Jan Cowan and his colleague Cluny Way created Global Design Studio in 2004 as a platform for international service-learning projects. In addition to the 2009 Thailand project, Global Design Studio has existing or recent projects in Indonesia, New Orleans, Canada, Hawaii, and Indiana.

Grote Industries Moves from Spain to Germany

Grote Industries, a producer of LED lighting technology, has announced the relocation of its European headquarters from Spain to Niederwinkling, near Straubing, Germany. In addition to its world headquarters in Madison, Indiana, Grote maintains facilities in Canada, Mexico and Asia and had conducted its European operations from Spain since 2005.

Bloomington Company Buys British Columbian Firm

Bloomington-based Author Solutions (ASI) has announced the acquisition of the publishing assets of Trafford Publishing of Victoria, British Columbia.

Since its founding, Trafford has helped more than 15,000 authors from more than 120 countries publish and bring to market nearly 20,000 new titles.

Author Solutions is a leader in indie book publishing, said to be the fastest-growing segment of book publishing.
