Québec Firm to Acquire Tangent Rail Corporation

Stella-Jones Inc. announced today that it has signed a non-binding letter of intent to acquire Tangent Rail Corporation (“Tangent”), a provider of wood cross-tie supply chain services to the railroad industry. This acquisition will expand Stella-Jones’ capabilities within the U.S. railway tie industry and provide the Company with creosote manufacturing operations. Stella-Jones is based in Saint-Laurent, Québec, Canada.

Tangent serves the railroad industry with treated wood products, mainly railway ties, through facilities located in Warrior, Ala.; Terre Haute and Winslow, Ind.; Alexandria, La. and McAlisterville, Penn. The wood preservative, creosote, is produced at its distilleries in Terre Haute, Ind., and Memphis, Tenn.

Germany Arrives in Terre Haute

A good old-fashioned German-style "Strassenfest" is planned in downtown Terre Haute at Ninth and Cherry Streets the last weekend in April. Admission is free!

Music, food and drink are promised from 11 a.m. until midnight Thursday, Friday and Saturday (24-26 April). Jay Fox and the Bavarian Showtime Band and Steve Meisner's Band will be playing.

It's sponsored by the Terre Haute German Oberlandler Club, a non profit social organization that strives to preserve and perpetuate the customs, traditions, language costumes, and music of our German heritage.

Another Immigrant Who's Benefitted Indiana

One of America's leading landscape architects emigrated from Germany to Indiana. George Kessler, who was born in Frankenhausen, Germany, is responsible for designing the original boulevard and park systems in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend and Terre Haute.

Kurt Culbertson, author of Landscape of the American Renaissance: The Life and Work of George Edward Kessler, will discuss "The Genius of George Kessler" during a presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday (29 August) in the Colfax Auditorium of the St. Joe Public Library in downtown South Bend.

Rose-Hulman's Fuel-Efficient Vehicle

Achieving a personal best -- 1,972.9 mpg -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Efficient Vehicles team finished among the top third of 60 competitors in the Shell Eco-Marathon's United Kingdom competition -- an event where engineers and scientists of the future have gathered for over 30 years in search of automotive fuel economy.

Rose-Hulman was the only entry from the United States at the Rockingham Motor Speedway near Corby, England. Overall, the team placed 10th in the gasoline fuel division and 18th among all competitors.

The best mileage performance was achieved by team Microjoule, from France, with a mileage of 10,516.9 mpg, short of the team's world record of 10,705 mpg set in 2004. The best collegiate entry came from Britain's Bath University, a perennial top contender, at 5,958.8 mpg.

Belgian beer to be brewed in...Terre Haute!

According to Inside INdiana Business, Brugge Brasserie, Indianapolis, is currently in final negotiations with Terre Haute Brewing Company to launch the bottling and distribution of its Belgian-style brews for a wider statewide audience.

The Terre Haute Brewing Company was established in 1837, and is the second oldest active brewery in the United States.
