Purdue Investigates Causes of Haiti Quake

Researchers at Purdue University have found that a previously unmapped fault was responsible for the devastating earthquake on 12 January in Haiti, and that the originally blamed fault remains ready to produce a large earthquake.

The team determined the earthquake's origin is a previously unmapped fault, which they named the Léogâne fault. The newly discovered fault runs almost parallel to the Enriquillo fault, which was originally thought to be the source of the earthquake.

The team analyzed data they recorded before the earthquake and new measurements taken after the event. Their work is detailed in a paper that will be published in the November issue of Nature Geosciences.

International Jurist Comes to Indy

The Honorable Patrick Lipton Robinson (pictured), President of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, will be honored at a reception 14 May at the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in room 385 at the law school, and members of the legal and international communities and the public are invited to attend.

Hon. Patrick Lipton Robinson, originally from Jamaica, has had a long and distinguished career in international law on the bench and in government service. He currently is principal advisor to the United Nations Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and has served on the International Bioethics Committee, Word Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and several world and regional bodies including the Commission of Truth and Justice – Haiti.

Following introductory remarks, President Robinson will accept questions from those attending at the reception. Admission is without charge but attendees are requested to make reservations by email, or 317:274-1917.

President Robinson was invited to Indianapolis by Christian Theological Seminary where he will receive an honorary doctorate degree at the seminary commencement exercises.

Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts at Purdue University

Purdue University student organizations have arranged a host of programs as part of an ongoing campus effort to raise money for Haiti, reports the Purdue News Bureau.

Delta Sigma Pi, a business professional fraternity, is having a fashion show from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday (25 January) at Fowler Hall on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette. Proceeds from the event will go to the Purdue Haiti Relief Fund.

Numerous student groups also will set up tables around campus in the coming weeks to collect donations. Engineering World Health: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 28 January inside Stewart Center; Multicultural Mujeres: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 26 and 27 January outside the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall and during the same time period on 2 and 3 February on the Purdue Memorial Mall; Purdue Organization for Labor Equality: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day through 2 March at the Bell Tower and Hello Walk.

Student organizations will continue to raise money for Haiti for the next three to five weeks.
