International Jurist Comes to Indy

The Honorable Patrick Lipton Robinson (pictured), President of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, will be honored at a reception 14 May at the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in room 385 at the law school, and members of the legal and international communities and the public are invited to attend.

Hon. Patrick Lipton Robinson, originally from Jamaica, has had a long and distinguished career in international law on the bench and in government service. He currently is principal advisor to the United Nations Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and has served on the International Bioethics Committee, Word Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and several world and regional bodies including the Commission of Truth and Justice – Haiti.

Following introductory remarks, President Robinson will accept questions from those attending at the reception. Admission is without charge but attendees are requested to make reservations by email, or 317:274-1917.

President Robinson was invited to Indianapolis by Christian Theological Seminary where he will receive an honorary doctorate degree at the seminary commencement exercises.

IUPUI Students Head to Jamaica

"Global Learning in Jamaica: Service and Culture" will take students from Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis to the Caribbean for a month beginning in mid-July.

The program begins with six class hours in the U.S. prior to departure for Jamaica, and students will attend four class-hours in the U.S. upon their return. Both classroom and service-learning are planned in Jamaica.

The students will journey to a small fishing village in southwestern Jamaica, where they will coordinate and teach at a youth day camp for 7-12 year olds, live with local families, and gain a global education from within the specifics of Jamaican culture.

The program is looking for donations of items for the day camp, which can be brought to either IUPUI or Indiana University Bloomington: arts and crafts supplies, athletic equipment, prices, school supplies and other necessities.

International Photo Contest at IUPUI

Study Abroad students compete each year in a photo contest at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis. This photo by Alysia Schwartz won First Place for Cultural Adventure and was the Grand Prize Winner: "No Change, No Course! Election time in Jamaica". Other winners include Rebecca Cluck, Josie Frisinger, Romel Collins, Kimberly Watlers, Treva Mitchell, Christin Johnson, Kristina Moorhead, Courtney Harris, Sarah Bowens, Anna Adrizzone and Abhishek Dube. You can see all the winning photos here. More than 250 photographs were submitted by IUPUI students who participated in study abroad programs during the 2006-2007 academic year. IUPUI is unique in the variety of study abroad programs offered to suit many majors as well as its selection of short-term programs. Students in the Schools of Medicine, Law, Liberal Arts, Herron School of Art, Engineering and Technology, Dentistry, PE/TCEM, Business, Nursing, Education, Science, University College, Social Work, Informatics, General Studies (CLN), and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs studied in 35 different countries in 2005-2006.
